Friday Holiday Weekend

Hey everyone. A three day holiday weekend is upon us. Today in social studies we completed the Interactive Notebook pages 168-170 and shared the correct responses. Students in Mr. Hogue's class also began working on making flash cards from the grid sheets as the vocabulary terms were listed for chapter 25 on the Focus Sheet. Students were given one of these in class and it is posted here as well in case you have misplaced yours. The flash cards are not due Tuesday. We will work with them in a few days. Today a Mentor Mob of videos was posted around 3:30 for students to view over the long weekend. There are 9 videos here but they are all very short at a couple of minutes each. The topic is longitude, latitude, and time zones. Tuesday we will post a quick quiz on Edmodo to follow up for practice and a "real" quiz will be on or about Friday of next week. If you are familiar with using longitude and latitude, these will be review. If you are not, follow along carefully and have a good jump on next week's activities. The Mentor Mob of videos is posted below.

Begin Reading Notes Chapter 25 Geography of Greece and its Settlements

Hello! Today we completed our Geography Challenge discussion of the answers. Please note that Mr. Hogue posted yesterday a copy of the questions in case you didn't have them. In Cobb's class we were able to problem solve some about tech issues related to Edmodo. Those students who haven't turned in their response should do so tomorrow or make arrangements to watch it as soon as possible. Students then discussed a pre-reading handout (green) and then completed it as a class. Some classes were then able to work on the reading notes with their partner for chapter 25. We will continue to work on them tomorrow. The only homework was to check Edmodo tonight.

Greece Geography Continued

Today, students completed the Geography Challenge for Greece and discussed the responses. We also shared student responses to the video clip that was pushed out last night. Those were collected. Some classes, time permitting, viewed CNN Student News current events or part of it.

If you did not turn in your responses or had Internet issues viewing the video clip, no worries, you can view it tonight and write your response to be turned in Thursday. Also, if your class did not finish or even watch CNN Student News, you can do so at this site http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/. It is linked below as well and is a ten minute clip available each day.

Geography Challenge - Greece

Tuesday we began work on the Geography Challenge for Greece. We will wrap up the challenge in class tomorrow so don't worry about finishing this up at home. But, for tonight, we have pushed out a video clip on the colonization of Greece and your assignment is to view the video and write a 1/2 page minimum response. A written response should have important facts/information and your thoughts. It does not have to be very long. The 1/2 page is just a guide.

Greece Unit Introduction

Today we completed our "clock appointment" schedules, went over the Focus Sheet and completed the sliders in the Learning Target section, and completed the personal content learning inventory. If you felt you had little to say on the inventory, that is OK as we are just beginning our work in the ancient world. You will only grow from here. I am still compiling a student list of turned in Edmodo guideline forms and as soon as that is complete your read-only status will be upgraded and you will be able to post and reply to posts. I may be able to upgrade you as soon as this evening. Stay tuned. When that happens, I will post a question that you may comment on. Here are the handouts from today: Greece Focus Sheet: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3pWd7Bl0ACpcm9fMmhIWkI3c00/edit?usp=sharing Greece Unit Pre-View: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1weRUOWIvAPpDxjmxbFoD0nPPuiUxnnGVlbEpo3BnlcQ/edit?usp=sharing

Thursday - Day Two

So, here is what went on today. We began sharing our 3-item bags with the class and attempted to introduce ourselves using items from home that best expressed ourselves. About 1/2 of the students in class had a chance to share and tomorrow, the rest will share. If you shared, you may take your bag home. If you have not or forgot to bring it in, you need to do so tomorrow (Friday). That will be the final day of sharing of the 3-item bags. We also began, and some classes completed, the T-Shirt activity in which you were to express yourself again only this time through art and drawing. Make sure you place your period number on the back before you turn yours in. Most classes will get a little time Friday to make your finale additions to your t-shirt. Remember, these will be placed on the wall in the hall for your friends to see as we will all be "Hanging Out" together! In these first few days we have and will be going over procedures and what we expect to happen in that area each day. So far, I believe we have had two great days as the school year has gotten under way. Again, we are glad you are here and get ready to have a blast at Discovery and especially in Social Studies.

Wednesday Opening Day!

Hi and welcome to a new school year and welcome to Discovery Middle School. I hope you had a great "First Day." Today we talked about some class procedures, introduced ourselves (Mrs. Cobb, Mr. Hogue, and for some Ms O'Grady who is Mrs. Cobb's student teacher in the spring) through the use of a Three-Item Bag, had a visit from Charlie Brown about lockers, and you talked to your table groups using a Gallery Walk with images from around the world. Tomorrow or Friday you will be given your Edmodo group codes and will in fact join your class groups.

Your Home Work assignment is to gather three items into a bag and bring them to school Thursday/Friday. You will have an opportunity to share yours with your class as a way of introduction. Those who share Thursday may take their items home and those who don't will hold them for Friday. The items should represent the favorite areas of your life you would like to share with the class. They should all fit into a bag of some sort which fits in your locker and not be expensive or too fragile.

Getting Ready!

Hello and welcome to the Blogger page for Mr. Hogue and Mrs. Cobb's Six Grade Social Studies classes. This blog has been created to assist in the communication between teacher and parents. The posts here are basically copy/pastes of the Edmodo posts each day. It is just another source depending on what works best for you. Each day's activities, assignments, and general information will appear here for the day. You may subscribe to this blog and receive it automatically to your inbox. If you sign up with your email and decide it is just another piece of email you don't need, you can simply delete it. No harm, no foul.

Thank you,
Mr. Hogue
Mrs. Cobb
