Role of Church Study Prep for Assessment

Hello! Today students reviewed the 8 vocabulary words found on the test by working with "houses" and grouping words together which have connections. Grouping words together to understand relationships between them is an important aid in learning vocabulary. Students were able to work on the reading and the reading notes for a large chunk of class today and much content was discussed. Students were also provided the content topics for the test. Refer to previous announcements for other study tools including the monster study stack! Reminder....the reading notes are designed to help in understanding of the text, not necessarily the specific questions on the tests. Students will be given about 30 minutes to study for the test tomorrow, some of which will be whole class review.

TCI Lesson 3

Today students reviewed their vocabulary terms in class for accuracy. We began in earnest on Lesson 3 in TCI and just got started with section 1 and part of section 2. Students responded to the text comprehension questions as we went. Teachers modeled reading and thinking of the concepts on these sections and students were encourage to use the "main idea" and "add notes" functions. The assessment for Lesson 3 will be on Friday and students have completed a gallery walk where they worked on and then shared vocabulary terms with one another. A rather long Study Stack was shared yesterday on announcements that included the vocabulary and content questions. Also, a list of concept topics was shared on Monday evening's announcement.

Test Tips:

Vocabulary sheet built from a combination of a gallery walk and double checking terms against a Study Stack.
Concept topics: list posted on Friday the 13th.

Vocabulary Work with Chapter 3

Hello! Hope you are all enjoying our winter wonderland! Today we continued to discuss and front load the vocabulary words for chapter 3. Students completed their in depth study of one of the words and then did a gallery walk to record the definitions on their handout. Some classes didn't get all the way through the gallery walk, but will get those definitions tomorrow or even below on the extensive study stack for the chapter. Students should be beginning to study the vocabulary words as we will have an assessment on Friday of this week. If there are students who are leaving school prior to Friday, they should talk with one of us about when this test should be completed.

Chapter 2 Feudalism Revisited

Today students created a Google Doc on which they were to reflect on their preparation for their Feudalism test taken yesterday. Overall, student scores reflected many gaps in their understanding of the concepts and or the vocabulary so we have elected to have an additional review session today in which we participated in Cafe Conversations. Seven main ideas were reviewed and a poster created for each. They are posted on each of your class period groups. The review did not cover vocabulary as that is on your Cobb Web. The re take will be tomorrow and every student is eligible to participate. Your top score between the two tests will be counted in HAC. The test will be exactly the same except the order will be different as Canvas scrambles them from student to student.

Remember, your Cafe Conversations are posted in your class period group. Good luck and do your best. Just retaking the test does not guarantee a better score. You have to change something in your study method to fill your gaps.

Assessment on Chapter 2 Feudal Europe

Today students started the day reviewing for the assessment using their completed Cobb webs and moved to reviewing the big ideas with their sticky notes. Students completed the 30 question multiple choice quiz on Canvas. When finished, students either viewed the a video found on yesterday's announcement or read chapter 3 in TCI. Students not recieving a 75% or better will be taking a retake on Friday on the vocabulary words from the Cobb web only.

Review Day

Today students worked on completing their Cobb web and preparing for the assessment. Students also played a jeopardy type game for review. Students must have the Cobb web complete as the ticket to take the test tomorrow. See yesterdays post/announcement to determine study tools. Students will be given a 30 question multiple choice tomorrow to show their learning on Feudal Europe.

Assessment Prep

Today students continued working toward their assessment over feudalism in Europe. They worked on completing their Google Documents over the social classes, their Reading Notes questions, and worked on Cobb Webs. Remember, the Cobb Web is your ticket to take the test on Wednesday and if you don't have it in your hand on Wednesday, you will have to complete one first for your ticket. You may also want to build a Quizlet or Study Stack to help you prepare. You may just want to use your Cobb Web for the vocabulary but you could also make up possible questions over the content of the reading for preparation.

Test Tips:
Complete the two Google Docs; Complete the TCI Reading Notes that go with the online textbook; Complete the Cobb Webb completely; Possibly make a Study Stack or Quizlet to practice chapter 2 reading concepts.
You have had class time to complete all of the above. Tomorrow, we will have a little more time to finish and go over some of the questions or any questions you may have.

The following docs are available on your student Canvas account.

Chapter 2 Feudal Europe Reading Notes

Hello! Today students worked with their partner to complete the reading notes for chapter 2 from TCI on-line textbook. Students can log on at home by going to TCI website and using the login: Teacher's Email = jcobb@phm.k12.in.us User Name = ID + initials and Password = ID. Students will then be able to read the textbook and complete the notes in their google drive. There was another document added today that had one additional question for sections 2.4-2.7. This link is found in the Hogue-Cobb 6 class under the modules tab on the left and should be added to google drive if it is not there. (This document should be in your middle ages folder in drive if it isn't already.) Students were also reminded about the Cobb web for the vocabulary for this chapter. Students should complete all parts of this by hand, not in drive. This link is provided just so students can print it off if they don't have it. If all else fails, take out a sheet of paper and draw one:) The vocabulary words to use on the Cobb web are found on the Middle Ages focus sheet, which is in students google drive. This should be completed on the day we take the assessment which is likely to be on Tuesday or Wednesday. So, over the weekend, students should be working on the Cobb web and possibly the reading notes. Neither is due on Monday. Stay warm this weekend! FYI....All items that are highlighted in blue have links connected. Sorry, you will have to access Canvas for the links. If you are a parent, your only access is through your child's account. They will show you how to navigate.

Debrief Activity and Start Reading Notes for Chapter 2 Feudal Europe

Hello! Students today were able to listen to some of the music parodies found on the announcement from yesterday and on the module Middle Ages. We then debriefed yesterday's activity. We did have a lot of fun and hopefully learned something along the way:) Students then worked with the reading from chapter 2 and the reading notes. Students did not finish and should finish tomorrow. Students should also work on the Cobb web for the vocabulary words given earlier in the week. The assessment looks like it might be Tuesday or Wednesday.

Medieval Manor Experience

Today students took part in a medieval manor experience. You should have learned the structure of a medieval manor in that the different stations in the social order depended on the other for survival. That is the basic premise for feudalism. Included below is a music parody about knights.

Tuesday - Essay Completion

Today students completed their essay response assessment. They used their video notes taken over the days last week to build a case for their choice of impacting events on the Dark Ages. They also began work on the vocabulary for chapter 2. We may not spend much more time in class on the vocabulary so students should work toward completing their Cobb Webs outside of class. You may have some time in class at the end or when work is completed in class. Remember to use your TCI text books which you have access to on line. The login is the same as when you are at school.

Dark Ages Video Wrap Up

Today we wrapped up the video on the Dark Ages. We did not watch it in its entirety but watched parts. The entire clip was posted yesterday and I have posted the Charlemagne clip today. We did not get to view it at all. You may view it as well as the Bubonic themed music video parody "Fleas on Rats" and "Charlemagne". We will use the notes you took next week to make a written response which will be assessed for a grade.

Tuesday - Dark Ages

Today students continued to view the video on the Dark Ages presented by the History Channel. This is a very good account of the time just before the fall of Rome to the start of the first Crusades in about 1100 A.D. The full length documentary is linked below. If you have gaps or missed some due to Chromebook issues or even missed it all, you may review it. This does not break it into sections as we did in class. Note: We will not be viewing it in its entirety as it is very long at around 90 minutes total. You will be using your note information for a writing opportunity early next week. As you well know, I am not in the habit of posting video clips that are longer than 10 minutes. I am posting this one for your reference only.

The following list is the time and title breakdowns as we viewed in class: 3:44 The Dark Ages, Chaos, War, and Disease; 5:12 Fall of the Roman Empire; 15:11 Anarchy, Chaos and Christianity; 11:25 Justinian and the Byzantines; 6:15 Bubonic Plague; 10:40 Benedict and Monasteries; 8:00 Franks and the Moors; 9:37 The Viking Invasion; 10:05 The Crusades.

There is not an assignment. This is just a resource.

End of Ancient World or the Fall of Rome

Hello! Today students worked with the TCI on-line textbook to complete the modules for lesson 1 and lesson 2. Some classes were able to discuss all of these lessons and move on to the reading challenge. Mr. Hogue will announce a winner on Monday for his classes. Students can work with the on-line textbook at home at anytime and will not be required to bring the purple textbook to class until later in the year as we will be using the on-line version for a while.

Note: Today is the final day for daily blog posts to be on Edmodo. From here on you will find the posts in the Announcements, on Canvas, and posted on Blogger. For the time being parents will have to log into your student's account to view the announcements. (It will be posted to the Social Studies 6 - Hogue & Cobb class.) I believe you can set the notifications in Canvas to notify you via text or email when an update or announcement happens. You may only be able to view announcements by logging into your child's account, at this time.

Tuesday Test Preparation

Today in both classes students worked on completing the Interactive Notebook and building and using Study Stack. You may need to continue working with your Study Stack activity at home depending on your level of readiness for the test on Wednesday. The test will be multiple choice and will contain 12 vocabulary terms plus 8 questions taken from the material in your Interactive Notebook pages 242-245 for a total of 20 questions.

Remember, blogging activities will cease on Edmodo after this week but will continue on this site and Canvas (Announcements). Here is the link for Canvas. You have to go into the PHM Canvas otherwise, it won't let you in. https://phm.instructure.com/login

Monday

Today students in Mr. Hogue's class built Study Stacks to use in preparation for the chapter 36 test on Wednesday. It took all of the class time and some students have to complete them at home. Remember, this test is multiple choice and consists of 12 of the vocabulary plus 8 questions from the interactive notebook chapter 36. Both levels will be on one test and there may be no retakes. Mrs. Cobb's class discussed some of the interactive notebook for chapter 36 and will finish tomorrow and build Study Stacks. If you built one at home tonight, you may get to play some of the games in class tomorrow for practice. You must practice the vocabulary to do well on this test.

Since we have been talking a bit about our calendar and its origins with Julius Caesar, I came across some interesting information. Check out this Google Doc I put together. Julian / Gregorian Calendar

Remember, this will be the last week that we will be posting to Edmodo. Future posts will be to Blogger and Canvas.

Friday - Catch Up Day

Hey all! Today students in Mr. Hogue's class took an opportunity to catch up on the interactive notebook pages 242-245. We also had a discussion over the material. If you missed, and you do not have these pages complete, you would be wise in completing them. Please use your text book chapter 36 to assist you. Mrs. Cobb's class caught up on the Veterans Day activity and began looking at some video clips on Christianity. Monday or Tuesday we will have a chance to work on the vocabulary for chapter 36.

Test Tips: Assessment over chapter 36 will be on Wednesday of next week. It will be a traditional multiple choice assessment of 20 questions. The first 12 or so will be the vocabulary from the Focus Sheet on Rome and chapter 36 and the remaining will be questions taken from your interactive notebook material.

Special Note:** You should start reading our daily blog posts on Canvas as we will be migrating all class activity to Canvas very shortly. Currently, we are posting to all three locations. Canvas login should include going to the PHM Canvas login. That is the only way it currently works. You can also login from the Student Launch Pad or google the URL phmcanvas. Your login is the same as your school username and the password is your id number only. Parents login user name is first initial, period, last name. I'm not sure if it is case sensitive. The password is your child's HAC password.

Veterans Day Activity on Canvas

Hello! Today students reviewed for the summary assessment. They should now have in their interactive notebook all main ideas for each section. These will not have to be memorized as students will be able to use this to create their pre-write for the summary of the chapter. We also began an activity to honor our Veterans. Students were introduced to the new management system from the corporation called Canvas. Students were given a login and were able to access the module on Veterans Day. We will be able to finish this activity later in the week.

Monday - Intro to Canvas

Monday students were introduced to Canvas which is a student management program that will allow us to deliver on-line content to students. One day, this will replace Edmodo as our main mode of communication between student and teacher. For now, please continue using Edmodo to keep up with our daily blogs. We will make the announcement which will mean a switch. This will be used primarily by social studies classes as we have been given the one to one ability in each classroom. Other teachers will continue using Edmodo. We spent time learning Canvas by working through a Veterans Day activity about memorials.

Test Tips: Wednesday is the next test and it will be to write a summary paragraph about chapter 37. You will have your notebook to write a pre-write. Then, you will be required to use only the pre-write to complete your summary paragraph. It is modeled exactly after the one we wrote for chapter 32 the other day.

Hey, it's Friday. Today students wrapped up their influences of Rome summary, marked it up, and reflected on it. This was test practice for writing a summary paragraph. They also had an opportunity to look at the final missing pieces of their interactive notebook pages 248-249 on the legacies of Rome. They will make use of these next week while building a pre-write to their next assessment. If you missed today, be sure to have your summary completed as well as mark it up and a reflection. You also will need your interactive notebook pages complete.

Test Tip: Be sure you have completed your interactive notebook pages 248-249 as you will be using this information to write a summary paragraph about chapter 37.

Wednesday Absent Work!

If you missed class or are on extended class leave, here are the documents you may need to assist you in keeping pace with the class.

Document 1. Complete this form taking details from each of the seven sections listed on the document. These details will assist you in the formation of a summary paragraph over chapter 32. You will need your text book chapter 32 and a copy of this document. The copy is so that you may type directly on the document. We completed this document in class on Tuesday but some students needed a little time on Wednesday, as well.

Document 2. After completion of document 1 use it to assist you in the writing of your summary paragraph over chapter 32. You will write a seven sentence paragraph summarizing chapter 32. You will begin with a topic sentence announcing your topic but not giving detailed information. Remember, your topic is what influenced Rome to become what they became. Sentence 2-8 are your detail sentences and will make use of the details you found to complete document 1. Sentence 9 will be your conclusion. Once again, this is a nine sentence paragraph. Type your summary in the place where it says: Write Your Summary Starting Here: When you finish use the check list to highlight the specific areas. Write "check" in the completed boxes of the grid.

If you miss Thursday, November 7, complete the interactive notebook pages 248-249 and use the text book chapter 37. Students will complete that during class time on Thursday.

Alexander the Great - Essay Day

Today we ventured into the sea of Chromebook. We began our essay response test over Alexander the Great. We will pick up tomorrow where you left off and complete your essay by the end of class. We should be able to begin right at the start as you all know how to fire up your machines and get to your documents. Please do not work on your essay, on Google Drive, at home as this is an assessment. As you learned in class today you are able to use your pre-write, notes, and transition sheets to complete your essay.

Test Tips: (essay)
*Some banned words for your essay: very, stuff, things, really, got, and there may be more but these come to mind.
*Indent your paragraphs. You may skip a space between paragraphs, if you wish.
*Avoid, at all costs, using "you" and "I" in your response.
*Never begin a sentence with "And".
*Don't use questions in your title (if you title your response) or your introduction. In fact, there should not be any questions in your response, if you can help it. Re-phrase any question you may want to use into a statement and back it up with source a citing.

Google Assessment

Please select Form 1 below. This is a "view only" file so you have to open it by logging into Google Drive. Make a copy and rename it with your last name, Chapter 30 Assessment, Period #. When finished, move to social studies turn in folder.

When you are ready to type your essay response, go to Google Drive and choose CREATE from the upper left. Choose DOCUMENT from the drop down. Immediately go to FILE and choose  RENAME . Rename it YOUR LAST NAME , CHAPTER 30 ESSAY , YOUR CLASS PERIOD NUMBER . You don't have to use all capital letters.

When you are writing your response, please minimize your "Assessment Form" so that you can have it on one side of your screen while you have your written response open on the other. You may want to fully minimize one or the other if the space is too small. Be sure to check back and forth between the two to make full use of the rubric portion of the Assessment Form checklist.

Monday

Today students received their scored essay responses from the chapter 31 test. We talked about the scoring and I gave details of what was expected for each legacy. We also talked and contrasted some "good" introductions with some weak ones. We discussed transition words and each student received a transition word handout which they will be able to use to on the chapter 31 essay tomorrow. We spent a little time completing student pre-writes. Students will be able to use their pre-writes on the test but not other resources such as notes or books.

Test Tips: Tomorrow the test will be an essay response. There is really no study necessary as students viewed the video, read the textbook, and read text documents about Alexander the Great. You already took notes on the character traits of a great leader and used those notes to formulate your pre-write. You may use your pre-write to aid you in writing your response. You will use the Chromebooks and Google Drive to write your response and mark it up.

Prewrite for Was Alexander Great? Essay

Hello! Today students placed their social studies reflection in their green student led conference folder and took it with them to all of their classes. Students will practice on Monday for student led conferences. We read a short article to determine the 2 purposes of introductions. Students then completed their primary source analysis with their partners. Students then walked through the prewrite for their essay and turned it in with their notes. We will write the essay on Monday in class. Enjoy the weekend and the many fall activities!

Finishing Notes about Alexander

Hello! Today we looked at the textbook and completed our charts about Alexander from it. Students shared out with their partners. We then discussed primary sources again as we began analyzing 4 different sources. We were about half way through with that and will finish up tomorrow before we begin the prewrite. Students will only be allowed to use the handout with their notes to do the prewrite. We will write the essay on Monday.

Part Three - Using Primary Source Documents

Today students began working with documents as part three of three in note taking for character traits. They will use this document as a resource to write their pre write tomorrow and then use the pre write as a resource to write their essay "test" on Monday. There is not really anything to study other than to be sure you have completed your data chart work from this week.

Preparing for Student-Led Conferences

Hello! Today we did some preparing for student led conferences next week. As a reminder to all...if you haven't already turned in your conference form that was mailed home, please be sure to do that! They were due today. Thanks. We analyzed the ISTEP scores from 5th grade in social studies and did some reflecting on 6th grade social studies so far this year. Students will be expected to share with parents these reflections. Also attached to the reflection is a pink sheet of paper which explains to parents and students that the corporation has purshase for social studies classrooms in 6th and 7th grades a classroom set of Google Chromebooks. Students will be able to use these in the classroom and at home to access the 7th grade textbook on-line. We will also use them for other purposes as well. We are excited at what new learning opportunities this new technology will provide. We then finished discussing chapter 30 and the notes that were taken about Alexander's events and facts which describe a character trait. Tomorrow we will look at some primary source documents that will give us more information.

Alexander the Great Fact Finding

Today students worked on their data charts gathering information on the traits of Alexander the Great from their textbooks. We will spend more class time on this activity as we move toward having information to support an opinion of how great or not so great Alexander the Great really was. We will continue work on this tomorrow.

Monday, October 14, 2013

Was Alexandar "Great"? Video

Hello! Hope you were able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weekend! Students continued to explore the question, was Alexander "great"? We further discussed character traits of both good and bad leaders. Students began taking notes from a video about Alexander. In their notes, they were recording events or facts about Alexander's life that reveal his character. They will add to their notes the next few days creating a single piece of paper that has evidence from three different sources: the video, the textbook, and several primary sources. In the end for the assessment essay, they will be able to write an essay that supports their opinions.

Marking Up Our Assessments

Hello! Today students were given 10 minutes to revise and edit their essays from yesterdays assessment. We then marked up their essays to reveal their successes. Students were able to give themselves an estimated grade based on the information that was to be included in their answer. Now, we will look at their essays and mark it for a final grade. Typically, students grades and teachers grades are very close. We then started a preview activity from the interactive notebook on page 192 to determine the traits of a good leader. This is an introduction to our next topic, Was Alexander Great? There is no specific homework for the weekend. Enjoy the weather!

Ancient Greece Assessment

Today students took the chapter 31 assessment. They had to write a written response where they chose from the 11 legacies of ancient Greece the one that impacts them the most. They had to support their claim with details and facts concerning the legacy. Tomorrow students will evaluate their work through text coding. They will have a short period of time when they may edit their work. This work is an assessment. Tomorrow students that are eligible will retake the chapter 29 assessment level C.

Test Preparation!

Hello! Today students finished up with their study of the primary source materials to discover the legacies of ancient Greece. They then wrote about the contributions in their interactive notebook. We discussed the answers and students created a type of study sheet to help them focus on their study on the 3 legacies. It included information about the placard, the legacy details (info from the interactive notebook), and the vocabulary details (information from the alpha blocks). I have included here a copy of my alpha block information if needed. Reminder to all....if you are being tested in essay form, you should study by writing some essays!

Learning About Ancient Greece Legacies

Hello! Today students discussed and wrote their own definition for primary and secondary source materials. We then viewed primary sources related to the 11 legacies in ancient Greece. Students then completed reading the section and taking notes on that specific legacy. We discussed in all classes what was on Mr. Hogue's post from yesterday about what to study for the test on Thursday. Remember...you need to know at least 3 legacies well. You should be creating a list of the contributions in each category and the vocabulary wrods that go with it.

Front Loading Vocabulary with Alpha Block Work

Today students worked another 30 minutes making it 60 minutes in all that they worked on the vocabulary using Alpha Blocks. The vocabulary in this chapter is really the names of important people that made major contributions in the form of legacies to modern civilization. We just began talking about the next class activity which will be matching legacies to primary source documents hanging on the white board. Test Tips: Assessment Thursday The chapter 31 assessment will be one essay question in which you will respond in paragraph form. There will be no basic level questions on this test. You will be assessed based on your written response. The format will be a three paragraph response in which directions will spell out the exact format and expectations. Be sure to master information based on at least THREE LEGACIES. You will be given a vocabulary list of terms to make use of in your response and the basic level will be demonstrated by your use and explanation of such terms. The eleven legacy primary source documents will be hanging on the white board for your reference. You will be allowed to leave your seat, if necessary, to view the documents closer. The following terms will be provided on the test so that you may enhance your response using appropriate vocabulary. You will not be required to use them all but your focus should be *Main Idea *Details (support) *Vocabulary use Archimedes Hypatia Euclid Pythagoras Hippocrates pediments Thucydides Herodotus Aristotle longitude latitude Olympics democracy Hipparchus Ptolemy frieze theater Aristarchus

Begin the Legacies of Ancient Greece

Hello! Today we began the next chapter, chapter 31 on the Legacies of Ancient Greece. Students discovered the definition of the word legacy and previewed the chapter with their partner. Then the focus turned to vocabulary. Students gave each of the 8 people (there are a total of 10 vocabulary words) a designated color. They then used their alpha blocks handout to write in the names in the designated color. As students read with their partner, they filled in related words in the same color. Students did not get far in the process and we will continue this on Monday. Our assessment for chapter 31 will be an essay. Students can begin studying by really knowing the legacies from each category in the chapter. Creating a study stack on the vocabulary words would help as well.

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Today we prepared for chapter 29 assessment and took it. Students talked with their partners about the reading notes and the Cobb web. The Cobb web was checked as the ticket to take the test. Students then completed the assessment and read an Upfront Magazine, a current events magazine for students. Finally, we watched CNNStudent News and talked a little about the government shutdown. There is no homework tonight!

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Hello! Sorry for the delay in post. Guess I didn't publish before I left school! Anyway, today we completed our stations for our visit to Athens. Students worked on making sure reading notes were completed correctly as we discussed the answers. This will be where the bulk of the B-A level of the test will come from tomorrow. The C level will be just from the 11 vocabulary words. Students can study the studystack created in class or the Cobb web. Reminder....the Cobb web is due as a ticket to take the test tomorrow (word, definition/ explanation, colored picture and sentences with the words underlined). Test in all multiple choice.

Tuesday Athens Visit

Today students continued work in chapter 29 by visiting some of the six stations representing various cultural centers of Athens. Tomorrow they will visit the remaining ones and review their interactive notebook responses. If you missed class, please complete your interactive notebook pages 190-191 for at least three sections. That will keep you up with the class for today.

Test Tips: Check out yesterday's post as it has the tips. It is not too early to be studying your vocabulary terms. Remember, you have to pass the C level first in order to score above a C.

Tour of Athens

Hi! Today, in Mr. Hogue's class, students turned in their paragraph practice on Persian Wars. Mrs. Cobb's class completed this on Thursday of last week. Both classes then started with work in chapter 29 over the legacies of ancient Athens. In this activity, over the next couple of days, students will take a walking virtual tour of the ancient city which will include stops in some (6) of the cultural centers. We will wrap up our tour and discuss a bit on Wednesday in preparation for the assessment on Thursday. If you miss class during this time you may use your textbook (chapter 29, pages 279-287) to complete the Reading Notes pages 190-191. The completed Cobb web (with definitions, colored illustrations, and sentences) is due on Thursday as ticket to take the test.

Test Tips: Test Thursday
Use your complete Cobb Web to study the eleven vocabulary terms.
Make a Study Stack of the eleven vocabulary terms to study.
Reread the textbook pages 279-287.
Study your Reading Notes pages 190-191.

The test will be in two parts. The basic C level will include the vocabulary terms. The B-A level will include questions that are a little higher order thinking and more conceptual. You will need to pass the C level to score above a 75% C. This test will be all multiple choice and will contain no essay questions.

Google Drive and Paragraph Work

Hello! Today in Mrs. Cobb's class we went to the computer lab. We set up our school google accounts and created folders for each class. Later we will be able to use the those folders in google drive to share documents with teachers. It was a great experience with Mrs. Burnette leading the way! We were also able to create free accounts on the web based program called study stack. Students started their own study stack for chapter 29 vocabulary, but most did not finish. You can finish those up anytime at home and use them to help you prepare for the assessment on chapter 29. That will likely be Thursday now. This is not required, but can be used as a tool to help you study. Mr. Hogue's class discussed the pre-write and were able to use it to write an essay. Hopefully, all the students now understand the value of the pre-write. It is where you do all your thinking. When you do the writing, it practically writes itself!

Homework: Completed Cobb web due the day of the test

Google Drive

Today Mr. Hogue's class worked in the computer lab setting up their Google Drive accounts. This will be one vehicle by which you may do your work and turn it in paperlessly. Google stores your papers and all creations in the cloud so you may access it and use it at home, as well. Mrs. Cobb's class finished up writing the paragraph that goes with the Persian Wars images and the video clip on the Golden Age of Greece. Tomorrow, Mrs. Cobb's class will work in the computer lab and Mr. Hogue's class will finish the image paragraph.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Wednesday

Today, in Mr. Hogue's class, we completed the Persian War image analysis and talked over and took notes for the pre-write for the essay response. Mrs. Cobb's class watched the video and took notes and worked on the written portion of the images analysis. None of this is for homework, unless you missed class.

Persian Wars and Golden Age Video

Hello! Today in Mrs. Cobb's class we finished up work on the Persians Wars. We began discussion on a pre-write and why they are so helpful. Students copied a pre-write for the essay on the handout about the Persian Wars. Tomorrow students will be able to see the merits of a pre-write and how easy it makes the writing. In Mr. Hogue's class today students viewed a video on the Golden Age of Athens, a pre-view for chapter 29. Students were taking notes from the video as we stopped and discussed. Tomorrow, the classes will switch. There is no homework except for working on the Cobb web which won't be due until we take the test on chapter 29 sometime next week. However, REMINDER.....the retake for chapter 26 is tomorrow! Students who need to take the retake will need to study. See previous posts for study tips. Be sure to go over very carefully your original test multiple choice section.

Monday, September 23, 2013

Monday

Today students completed most of their image analysis work on the Greco-Persian Wars. This work is similar to the model of the PLT (Performance Literacy Task) assessment. This activity will culminate with a writing assignment (in class) in which they will conclude their work with a paragraph response. Students have already begun their work in chapter 29 with the Cobb Webb work last Friday. The retake opportunity will take place Wednesday and will be the C level assessment only and allow students that scored below that to raise their score to 75%.

 Retake Test Tips:
*Students should know the eight vocabulary terms from the Focus Sheet for chapter 26. They may use or make flashcards, Study Stack, or just study their vocabulary chart that they made for the chapter. *Students should be able to explain each of the four governments.
*Students should be able to order the four governments used by the Athenians according to their use (as in which came first, second, and so on).

Friday Post (on Thursday afternoon)

Hey, it's Friday. Today in class students were given the handout "Cobb Web." This is a modified Frayer model on which a maximum of twelve vocabulary terms may be collected and displayed on one page (two sides). Students worked on locating the terms in their text books, wrote the term, illustrated it, and defined it in the appropriate boxes. Then, each of the terms were used in a compound sentence or sentences per each side. We closed the class out with CNN Student News on current events.

I have provided another copy of the Cobb Webb and a Focus Sheet for Greece on this post.

The retake for the Greece governments test will be Wednesday and will be only the C level. You should study your vocabulary terms and basic concepts for the governments. We will narrow your study and give your a bit more guidance on Monday in class.

Thursday

Hey all. Thursday students received their Greece governments assessments back and we looked at the correct responses as well as the details that were required for a high score on the essay portion. The test was broken into two parts as the multiple choice portion was considered to be the basic C level and the essay the B-A level. If you scored below a 75% you are eligible to retake the C level portion next Wednesday in class. We also continued our work with the image analysis handouts on significant ancient Greek battles. We completed the images of Darius and the council of war and the battle of Marathon. Most classes just began working on the battle of Thermopylae. Those videos have been pushed out here on Edmodo and are optional for you to view ahead of time. Please do not complete the handouts associated with the battles we have not yet addressed in class. They will be completed with partners in class.

Wednesday

Hello! Today we began discussing the Persian Wars. Our focus was to learn how to "read" a picture and analyze it. We viewed part of the Battle of Marathon video from yesterday's post. The videos posted here are OPTIONAL as we will be viewing and discussing them in class. They are fun to watch and you can view them again over the next few days.

Greece Governments Assessment and Constitution Day

Hey guys! Today we took the assessment over four governments implemented by ancient Greece. Today, September 17,  is "Constitution Day" a day set aside to celebrate and remember the signing and adoption of the US Constitution in 1787 by the Constitutional Convention. I have posted the link here so that you may view CNN Student News as it has a segment on the US Constitution. It is also a day to celebrate US Citizenship and those that have become US Citizens. Viewing this video is OPTIONAL, but interesting!

Preparing for Greece Government Assessment

Hello all! Just wanted to send a note specific to my classes today. We were able to discuss the retakes for the latitude and longitude quiz on Friday. Almost all students improved a great deal on the second. Great job! We discussed some possible reasons about why that happened. There is a learning curve for most students to find what it takes to perform their best on assessments. I am here to support you to figure out what it takes for you to do just that. My goal is to teach you the tools to be able to perform at your best as much as possible. Next, we completed our role playing activity and reading notes for chapter 26. We then had a discussion about Edmodo. There were very few who completed the videos posted on Edmodo on Friday and the notes. We discussed how this is designed to aid in the learning and is another tool to help you be successful. Just like one of tonight's post which is a study stack of the vocabulary words. On the test the multiple choice will be from the vocabulary and the essay will be about the types of governments. Keep your head and stay on it! You can do it! Tonight it would be helpful for you to complete the graphic organizer handout from class today to help you study. (I have attached it if you didn't remember to bring it home.) If the videos don't work, use your textbook and interactive notebook! Be resourceful! Happy studying!

Reminder ..... don't memorize the dates of the types of governments. They were there to help you figure out which ones came in what order.

Latitude Longitude Retake and Cyber Safety Lesson

Friday we took a retake test over using longitude and latitude coordinates. You may score as high as 100% on this retake. We also talked about cyber security with a lesson called "Scams and Schemes." Vocabulary such as scam, identity theft, and phishing were explained as well as examples given in the form of phishing emails. Watch what you open and a good rule of thumb is that if you don't know where or whom the email is from, it is a good idea not to open it.

This weekend we are pushing out some review videos of the four Greece government types. Please view them and use the e-handout to record your information. If you don't have a printer you may create a look-alike handout out of notebook paper. The longest video is 2:45 or so.

Test Tips: This Tuesday will be the assessment over the governments of Greece. The basic level portion will be dedicated to the eight vocabulary terms listed on the Focus Sheet and the same ones we worked with the week. You may use the tally chart you created to study the terms. You may create a Study Stack to practice the terms as flashcards. If you do not know how to create one, you probably will have to wait on this tool. You may create paper flashcards to study. The B-A level portion of the test will cover information about the governments. You may reread your text book chapter 26 and look over your interactive notebook pages for the same chapter (pages 172-173). Watch the video reviews of the four governments posted below and review your notes from those videos. Review the study chart that will be created on Monday during your class period.

4 Types of Government in ancient Greece Role Play

Today Mr. Hogue's class completed the activities associated with ancient Greek governments. Mrs. Cobb will complete them tomorrow. We also wrapped up the gallery walk which will conclude class time allowed for the eight vocabulary terms. We will have an assessment next week and a portion of that will include the vocab. The typical assessment opens with a multiple choice section covering the vocabulary. This is considered the basic level and passing that part will earn you a C. The B-A level of the assessment will contain more difficult items such as higher level multiple choice questions and typically some sort of essay or free response question. Remember our paragraph activity we did last week? That was a sample of a free response. You will have to answer with a main idea, support it with details, and use content vocabulary in order to earn a B or an A. Reminder....retake for the latitude and longitude quiz is tomorrow. We will be providing you with the map on the quiz and you will be locating both cities and countries. It is designed to focus solely on the skills of latitude and longitude. Be sure to bring your completed practice sheet to the retake.

Review for Quiz and Current Events

Today in Mrs. Cobb's class we reviewed the latitude and longitude practice for the quiz on Friday. We also discussed the current events situation including Syria and 9/11. We also heard from students about different types of governments in ancient Greece. In Mr. Hogue's class students completed their running word wall of the vocabulary words for chapter 26. Students then completed a gallery walk to record the definitions. I can to visit Mr. Hogue's classes today and we reviewed together the latitude and longitude skills from the review sheet. Homework for tonight includes studying for retake and completion of the handout.

Tuesday

Tuesday in class Mr. Hogue's class began work in chapter 26 which is on governments in ancient Greece. They experienced two government simulations. The governments of monarchy and oligarchy were demonstrated and students read and began completing the interactive notebook page 172 (26.2 and 26.3). Mrs. Cobb's class completed the vocabulary word wall and gallery walk for the terms in chapter 26.

Be sure to practice your longitude and latitude coordinate work in preparation for Friday's retake test. We also practiced a couple of coordinates to locate world cities.

If you are retaking the test Friday, you need to have ready and completed the retake practice sheet. I have included a link to a practice sheet for longitude latitude on which you place your responses and it grades them automatically.

Monday

Hey! it's Monday and in class today we reviewed the latitude longitude test results. Your scores were not very good and as this is a skill, I am offering a retake test on Friday. There will only be one retake and your retake will be your final score. There is no cap on this which means that anyone may retake it in order to raise your score to a max of 100%. See the retake handout. Also, we began work on vocabulary for chapter 26. You have been placed into eight groups and each is responsible for one vocabulary term. We will conclude the work tomorrow with a gallery walk so that you may each collect information on each of the eight terms (yours plus seven others).

Retake Tips:
Be sure to practice your skill as only you can assess where you are at that skill. Be honest. If you cannot be successful at finding the city every time, then you need more practice.
Use Study Stack for coordinates and their correct answer. There are two stacks posted from last week. Sept. 4th and 5th have part one and part two stacks and Sept. 4th has the link to "Where's Hannah" game of grid work.
Wednesday we will have a specific class practice session to answer any questions you may have. You are responsible for practicing your skill.

Friday

Hello! Today in class we did some preparation and practice for the quiz in the form of partner review. Students then took the quiz and read ahead to chapter 26 when they finished. We know that some students were concerned about the results of todays quiz. We would like you to think about what you did to prepare for this quiz knowing at the beginning of the week that this was coming today. Everything we experience provides us with an opportunity to grow as a person. What we are hoping is that you take a serious, honest look at your preparation. Is there anything you would do differently next time? What did you do right in preparation? What will you do again next time? Mr. Hogue and I will discuss the results and determine our next step knowing that providing an opportunity for a retake is an option, but something we are not required to do as teachers. We hope you have a great weekend and enjoy the weather as it mostly certainly won't last!

Thursday

Today students worked on longitude and latitude coordinates. We are preparing for the assessment tomorrow. Mrs. Cobb had some students working in computer lab finishing up some things. We also wrote and or scored the "Why did the Greeks colonize?" question by viewing a rubric lesson on three separate responses. Students looked at their response and compared theirs to the ones presented on the video. Remember, in order to score high on a written response you have to have the main idea correct (answer to the question) and show detailed information supporting your main idea. You also have to use content vocabulary in your response to show that you understand. A good paragraph response has all of these three elements and really explains the concept fully.

I will push out another practice set of coordinates so that you may practice or check yourself for understanding.

I also pushed out another quiz covering the longitude and latitude video clips. It is on your class period group. Assessment Tips: Practice using longitude and latitude coordinates by playing the "Hanna" game, work with Study Stack, or practice with a friend or family member using a map, The assessment will include coordinates with which you will have to locate the city or country. It will also include the name of cities where you have to state the coordinates of their location. This will be your first social studies grade.

Below is a video clip showing an example of how writing will be scored in Social Studies.

Wednesday

Well, we are past the middle of the week and still going strong. Love these short weeks. Anyway, today in social studies we worked on Longitude and Latitude for the second day as we move toward Friday's assessment over the same. If you are not getting the locations correct when we practice, please let your teacher know or figure out what is going wrong. You don't want to find out on Friday during the assessment. Mrs. Cobb's class finished up with the Interactive Notebook pages and discussed them. Mr. Hogue's class completed that previously. We worked on flash card vocabulary for a bit as you are able to make use of them writing your paragraph. Lastly, Mr. Hogue's class began a writing assignment which is to write a paragraph response to the question of "Why did the Greeks colonize?" Remember, in order to score high on this, a writing assignment, or an assessment response you have to write your *Main Idea (the answer to the given question), *Details (that support your answer), and *Vocabulary use (the vocabulary that we are working on at the time). Remember also, your answer could be correct but because of lack of details and or vocabulary use may not earn a high grade. And if you remember correctly there are more than one reasons they colonized. Mrs. Cobb's class will start the day off with this tomorrow. We will have a screen cast showing examples of a low grade, medium grade, and high grade response. Your response will not be for a grade. It is only practice and an opportunity for you to see how your work falls in line with what we expect a response to be. Mr. Hogue's class should bring completed paragraph or longer response to class as you will need it on hand for the review work. Homework: Study for latitude and longitude quiz on Friday and bring a headset if you have one to listen to videos in class tomorrow.

Below is a copy of the video clip we viewed today demonstrating how a written response will be scored in social studies.

Semester Pre-Test and Latitude/Longitude Practice

Welcome back from a hopefully fun three-day holiday break. Today we took the pre-test for semester one content in social studies. This assessment was taken in the computer lab and should reflect what you know ahead of what we are studying. If you did poorly on this pre-assessment, that is OK as it is just an indicator of what you may already know. We will take a post test at the end of the first semester shortly after winter break to see your improvement. We also began work on latitude and longitude coordinates. You were assigned the Mentor Mob collection of short video clips (August 30 post) to view over the weekend and tonight I am posting a short "quick" quiz to cover those videos. You have to view the vids in order to score well on the quiz. This quiz will not count for a grade but will test you on your recall of the vids. The post will be directly after this one and will require you to take it on Edmodo. You will learn your score directly after submitting it. Each day we will have a warmup using longitude and latitude coordinates to locate locations on a map. Friday there will be a "real" quiz to test your skill on said coordinates. Each day at the start of class you should test your skill so we may trouble shoot any problems using the coordinates. The name of today's quiz is Latitude and Longitude Quick Quiz and is posted on Tuesday, September 3 in your PERIOD CLASSES not in all classes.

Hey everyone. A three day holiday weekend is upon us. Today in social studies we completed the Interactive Notebook pages 168-170 and shared the correct responses. Students in Mr. Hogue's class also began working on making flash cards from the grid sheets as the vocabulary terms were listed for chapter 25 on the Focus Sheet. Students were given one of these in class and it is posted here as well in case you have misplaced yours. The flash cards are not due Tuesday. We will work with them in a few days. Today a Mentor Mob of videos was posted around 3:30 for students to view over the long weekend. There are 9 videos here but they are all very short at a couple of minutes each. The topic is longitude, latitude, and time zones. Tuesday we will post a quick quiz on Edmodo to follow up for practice and a "real" quiz will be on or about Friday of next week. If you are familiar with using longitude and latitude, these will be review. If you are not, follow along carefully and have a good jump on next week's activities. The Mentor Mob of videos is posted below.

Begin Reading Notes Chapter 25 Geography of Greece and its Settlements

Hello! Today we completed our Geography Challenge discussion of the answers. Please note that Mr. Hogue posted yesterday a copy of the questions in case you didn't have them. In Cobb's class we were able to problem solve some about tech issues related to Edmodo. Those students who haven't turned in their response should do so tomorrow or make arrangements to watch it as soon as possible. Students then discussed a pre-reading handout (green) and then completed it as a class. Some classes were then able to work on the reading notes with their partner for chapter 25. We will continue to work on them tomorrow. The only homework was to check Edmodo tonight.

Greece Geography Continued

Today, students completed the Geography Challenge for Greece and discussed the responses. We also shared student responses to the video clip that was pushed out last night. Those were collected. Some classes, time permitting, viewed CNN Student News current events or part of it.

If you did not turn in your responses or had Internet issues viewing the video clip, no worries, you can view it tonight and write your response to be turned in Thursday. Also, if your class did not finish or even watch CNN Student News, you can do so at this site http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/. It is linked below as well and is a ten minute clip available each day.

Geography Challenge - Greece

Tuesday we began work on the Geography Challenge for Greece. We will wrap up the challenge in class tomorrow so don't worry about finishing this up at home. But, for tonight, we have pushed out a video clip on the colonization of Greece and your assignment is to view the video and write a 1/2 page minimum response. A written response should have important facts/information and your thoughts. It does not have to be very long. The 1/2 page is just a guide.

Greece Unit Introduction

Today we completed our "clock appointment" schedules, went over the Focus Sheet and completed the sliders in the Learning Target section, and completed the personal content learning inventory. If you felt you had little to say on the inventory, that is OK as we are just beginning our work in the ancient world. You will only grow from here. I am still compiling a student list of turned in Edmodo guideline forms and as soon as that is complete your read-only status will be upgraded and you will be able to post and reply to posts. I may be able to upgrade you as soon as this evening. Stay tuned. When that happens, I will post a question that you may comment on. Here are the handouts from today: Greece Focus Sheet: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3pWd7Bl0ACpcm9fMmhIWkI3c00/edit?usp=sharing Greece Unit Pre-View: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1weRUOWIvAPpDxjmxbFoD0nPPuiUxnnGVlbEpo3BnlcQ/edit?usp=sharing

Thursday - Day Two

So, here is what went on today. We began sharing our 3-item bags with the class and attempted to introduce ourselves using items from home that best expressed ourselves. About 1/2 of the students in class had a chance to share and tomorrow, the rest will share. If you shared, you may take your bag home. If you have not or forgot to bring it in, you need to do so tomorrow (Friday). That will be the final day of sharing of the 3-item bags. We also began, and some classes completed, the T-Shirt activity in which you were to express yourself again only this time through art and drawing. Make sure you place your period number on the back before you turn yours in. Most classes will get a little time Friday to make your finale additions to your t-shirt. Remember, these will be placed on the wall in the hall for your friends to see as we will all be "Hanging Out" together! In these first few days we have and will be going over procedures and what we expect to happen in that area each day. So far, I believe we have had two great days as the school year has gotten under way. Again, we are glad you are here and get ready to have a blast at Discovery and especially in Social Studies.

Wednesday Opening Day!

Hi and welcome to a new school year and welcome to Discovery Middle School. I hope you had a great "First Day." Today we talked about some class procedures, introduced ourselves (Mrs. Cobb, Mr. Hogue, and for some Ms O'Grady who is Mrs. Cobb's student teacher in the spring) through the use of a Three-Item Bag, had a visit from Charlie Brown about lockers, and you talked to your table groups using a Gallery Walk with images from around the world. Tomorrow or Friday you will be given your Edmodo group codes and will in fact join your class groups.

Your Home Work assignment is to gather three items into a bag and bring them to school Thursday/Friday. You will have an opportunity to share yours with your class as a way of introduction. Those who share Thursday may take their items home and those who don't will hold them for Friday. The items should represent the favorite areas of your life you would like to share with the class. They should all fit into a bag of some sort which fits in your locker and not be expensive or too fragile.

Getting Ready!

Hello and welcome to the Blogger page for Mr. Hogue and Mrs. Cobb's Six Grade Social Studies classes. This blog has been created to assist in the communication between teacher and parents. The posts here are basically copy/pastes of the Edmodo posts each day. It is just another source depending on what works best for you. Each day's activities, assignments, and general information will appear here for the day. You may subscribe to this blog and receive it automatically to your inbox. If you sign up with your email and decide it is just another piece of email you don't need, you can simply delete it. No harm, no foul.

Thank you,
Mr. Hogue

Socratic and ECA

Today students completed the ECA multiple choice section in Mrs. Cobbs class. Some classes were able to continue the socratic seminar. Mr. Hogue/Clark's class students completed essays and worked on socratic seminar. If for any reason, you do not get to complete socratic seminar tomorrow, YOU MUST TURN IN YOUR PRE-WRITE! We will use that to grade with. I am not sure what the schedule will be like with your hour of free time after lunch. Especially period 4, be sure to turn it in if you don't get to it. Otherwise, you will be doing it on our field day Wednesday.

Socratic Seminar/ ECA

Mrs. Cobb's Class: We continued our Socratic Seminar today. Students did not finish so we will continue it on Monday after the ECA multiple choice section which should take about half the period. Mr. Hogue's Class: Students in Mr. Hogue's class took the multiple choice section of the ECA today. They will take the essay portion tomorrow just like Mrs. Cobb's class. Monday Mr. Hogue's classes will continue with Socratic Seminar and likely have to finish on Tuesday. Getting closer.....

Preparation for Socratic Seminar

Hello! Today students turned in their self-evaluation for their oral presentation. They then discuss the PLT results. Students were shown an exemplar and were reminded to explain keeping the question in mind. Students were then given time to review the data posted in the classroom about their countries to use to answer their Socratic Seminar questions. Most classes will be given some extra time tomorrow to finish up their pre-write before beginning the socratic seminar. Cobb's class will complete socratic seminar on Wed and Thurs and Hogue/Clark will go on Wed and Monday with the ECA on Thursday and Friday.

Amish Acres

Hi! Today we had a great trip to Amish acres. We watched live performance of Tom Sawyer and then topped it off with a great lunch, including dessert! Students need to be sure self-evaluation is completed for Tuesday! Also, if any students were assigned a retake, that is on Tuesday as well. Please send me a direct post when you believe you are coming to see me! Enjoy the great 3 day weekend!

Data Sharing for Socratic Seminar

Hello! Today students worked in their small groups to share their data and create their charts. Students were given the socratic seminar questions to be thinking about. They are not due until Wednesday when we start the socratic seminar, but students can be thinking about what they would answer and some of their reasons. They wouldn't be able to record the support until class on Tuesday, but it would give them a head start. Students were also given time in class to complete their self-evaluation of their presentation. These are due on Tuesday. Tomorrow is Amish Acres!!!!

Vocabulary Quiz

Hi! It was nice to be back today! We reviewed 3 of the vocabulary words with a quick Prezi and students were given a few minutes to study for the quiz. Students then took the quiz and read an Upfront Magazine. Some students took advantage of coming in outside of class to work with their partners either before school or at lunch. Remember....presentations start Monday and you will be graded on your half of the information only. Hope this has been fun for you! Tomorrow we will take the quarter 4 PLT. Students are reminded to only spend about 10 min or so on part 1 and then spend the rest on part 2. Good luck tomorrow and have a great weekend! I will be out returning to the doctor for a check!

IMC work day on Current Evenets

Hello! Today we were in the IMC working on completing our pink research packets. Students were each suppose to bring in a copy of 2 different current events from their country. Some students didn't have any which made it difficult to work. Students will be given a small amount of time tomorrow in class to work on sharing information. The pink sheets are due as they walk in to class. This is very important to have this first task completed as students will be working on their oral presentations starting Thursday. Final vocabulary quiz is tentatively set for Tuesday of next week. All students should work on them.

Friday

Hey all. Today students worked in the IMC with their partner to further their research on the country of their choice. Hopefully, you got a lot accomplished and I provided the first three pages of the Wicki for each country. If you did not get yours, ask your teacher for a copy. You can also print your own from home, as well. Also, you are to be collecting some current events from the last few weeks per your country. You can also print any other research you think you may need. Remember, we are a little resource challenged at school of late.

A word about GDP. This, of course stands for Gross Domestic Product. It can be confused with GNP Gross National Product. The difference is that GDP only counts the "in country" production value of goods and services where as GNP counts in-country and out-of-country as long as it is owned by a business in-country. Follow that? When talking or showing GDP please use GDP per capita (total divided by the population) and PPP (PPP takes into account the relative costs and the inflation rates of the countries) and it stands for purchasing power parity. This means that it takes into consideration inflation of currency and prices etc. This is a more true number to be used to compare people in a country's buying power compared to other countries. You always have to compare your numbers with those of another country for the numbers to really make sense. For example I always compare other countries to the United States because we are familiar with daily life and the buying power of the US dollar. You always compare things to make sense of them.

The vocabulary test will be moved back another week to May 14 (Tuesday) because of the ISTEP being moved back. The following are the possible assessments remaining (chance to raise your grade) for the school year. Of course, these are subject to change as we must remain flexible as always. This is just a heads-up.

Vocabulary test
Oral presentation along with a visual
Analysis of countries presented to be used in our final Socratic Seminar
Final PLT number 4for sixth grade social studies
ECA (End of Course Assessment)

This looks like a lot so they are subject to change.

On another note, today was my last day at school for this year. My Mom is ill and I need to be available to help her and my Dad with some day-to-day needs. I will miss all of you greatly and I may appear here on Edmodo from time to time. Feel free to ask me questions concerning your countries or events happening in your countries. I would love to chat about them and help you with resources, if I can. I will have a long-term sub and hopefully that person will teach the entire rest of the year. Curriculum will continue as it has as Mrs. Cobb will lead the way. I will be involved with determining your final grade (Mr. Hogue's classes).

Types of Economies

Hello! Today we did a simulation called Cobb/Hogue Cool Catz Company where students experienced 3 types of economies: market, command, and mixed. Students then took some quick notes on each type from a power point. They also viewed a quick video clip about them which added a fourth, traditional. (posted) Students then were able to look at their country and determine which type it was. Some classes had a little time to research their country. Students MUST find a current event article and bring to class tomorrow. You can clip it from the newspaper or print it off from the internet. Some groups will be ready for this 4 big idea tomorrow as we will be researching all class in the IMC.

Wednesday - Inflation-Supply and Demand

Today students text coded two articles on Inflation and Supply and Demand. They also recorded on a poster information vital to those two articles that were just text coded. Friday, we will be back in the IMC again. Please bring in printed copies of your information so you and your partner can pull important facts and discuss them (with your partner).

IMC Research

Hello! Today we went to the IMC and researched. Students were to print off a copy of the information for their country from the CIA world fact book site from the weekend post. If you didn't get that done yesterday, you should get that done as soon as possible. Students will need to bring that with them everyday. Tomorrow we will finish the work on the Inflation mini-lesson.

Monday, April 29, 2013

Monday

Today in social studies we viewed two Kahn Academy video clips on Inflation. We discussed the topic and looked at inflation rate as well. We will pick up this mini lesson again on Wednesday for completion. The video clips are posted below.

Friday

Hey, it's Friday. Students today took a self assessment test to recognize where they stand on the vocabulary terms we began this week. There are quite a few at 36 and some of them are actually concepts so they have lengthy meanings. We will be using this list as we build our country presentations as well as have mini lessons throughout the next weeks. The key or at least the definitions to the terms is posted below.

Thursday

Hi guys. Sorry this post is a bit late. I will post the vocabulary "key" tomorrow. Sorry, if this is an inconvenience for you all. Tomorrow, we will spend some time practicing and working with your terms and have the self evaluation test. Remember, not for a grade. That is where the "self assessment" comes in. I hope your day went smooth as you had a chance to choose your country of either Latin America or Western Europe. I am really exited about this project we will be working on for a few weeks. We will be stretching you as we move into terminology that you are not used to. We will have mini lessons here and there to help you be grounded in your search and as to what the terms mean and how they are used. This will give you, hopefully, a great foothold on how they are used in "real life" as they are connected to various countries and their cultures, politics, and governments. Hold on to your hat and here we go!

Wednesday

Hello! Today we worked on the vocabulary words some more and many papers were passed back and discussed. (socratic seminar, PLT Q2 grade, PLT Q3 no grade) The practice test will be given on Friday on all the vocabulary words. The final test will be given after ISTEP. Those definitions should be completed soon. We will spend a little time in class each day until Friday, but not likely enough to complete all the definitions. Friday we will discuss them all after the practice test.

Tuesday - Vocabulary Search

Today we had a bit of a snafu on what we wanted to do. Due to wireless limitations we elected to search out the vocabulary sheet of terms and concepts the old fashioned way. We used textbooks and dictionaries. Some students who had access to 3G and 4G or had previously downloaded of line dictionary type apps could use their phones or iPods off the wireless connection. The vocabulary list is available on yesterday's post. It is not due tomorrow but students should be moving forward on gathering the information as a self assessment will take place on Friday to see where they have progressed. After ISTEP week we will have an assessment that will be scored as a grade. I will update you when that date nears and is finalized. Note! It will be after ISTEP week. You may complete the sheet in hard copy form or on Google Docs or a combination of both. You may also choose flash cards or any other mode we have looked at so far this year. You have that option or choice.
