Dark Ages Video Wrap Up

Today we wrapped up the video on the Dark Ages. We did not watch it in its entirety but watched parts. The entire clip was posted yesterday and I have posted the Charlemagne clip today. We did not get to view it at all. You may view it as well as the Bubonic themed music video parody "Fleas on Rats" and "Charlemagne". We will use the notes you took next week to make a written response which will be assessed for a grade.

Tuesday - Dark Ages

Today students continued to view the video on the Dark Ages presented by the History Channel. This is a very good account of the time just before the fall of Rome to the start of the first Crusades in about 1100 A.D. The full length documentary is linked below. If you have gaps or missed some due to Chromebook issues or even missed it all, you may review it. This does not break it into sections as we did in class. Note: We will not be viewing it in its entirety as it is very long at around 90 minutes total. You will be using your note information for a writing opportunity early next week. As you well know, I am not in the habit of posting video clips that are longer than 10 minutes. I am posting this one for your reference only.

The following list is the time and title breakdowns as we viewed in class: 3:44 The Dark Ages, Chaos, War, and Disease; 5:12 Fall of the Roman Empire; 15:11 Anarchy, Chaos and Christianity; 11:25 Justinian and the Byzantines; 6:15 Bubonic Plague; 10:40 Benedict and Monasteries; 8:00 Franks and the Moors; 9:37 The Viking Invasion; 10:05 The Crusades.

There is not an assignment. This is just a resource.

End of Ancient World or the Fall of Rome

Hello! Today students worked with the TCI on-line textbook to complete the modules for lesson 1 and lesson 2. Some classes were able to discuss all of these lessons and move on to the reading challenge. Mr. Hogue will announce a winner on Monday for his classes. Students can work with the on-line textbook at home at anytime and will not be required to bring the purple textbook to class until later in the year as we will be using the on-line version for a while.

Note: Today is the final day for daily blog posts to be on Edmodo. From here on you will find the posts in the Announcements, on Canvas, and posted on Blogger. For the time being parents will have to log into your student's account to view the announcements. (It will be posted to the Social Studies 6 - Hogue & Cobb class.) I believe you can set the notifications in Canvas to notify you via text or email when an update or announcement happens. You may only be able to view announcements by logging into your child's account, at this time.

Tuesday Test Preparation

Today in both classes students worked on completing the Interactive Notebook and building and using Study Stack. You may need to continue working with your Study Stack activity at home depending on your level of readiness for the test on Wednesday. The test will be multiple choice and will contain 12 vocabulary terms plus 8 questions taken from the material in your Interactive Notebook pages 242-245 for a total of 20 questions.

Remember, blogging activities will cease on Edmodo after this week but will continue on this site and Canvas (Announcements). Here is the link for Canvas. You have to go into the PHM Canvas otherwise, it won't let you in. https://phm.instructure.com/login

Monday

Today students in Mr. Hogue's class built Study Stacks to use in preparation for the chapter 36 test on Wednesday. It took all of the class time and some students have to complete them at home. Remember, this test is multiple choice and consists of 12 of the vocabulary plus 8 questions from the interactive notebook chapter 36. Both levels will be on one test and there may be no retakes. Mrs. Cobb's class discussed some of the interactive notebook for chapter 36 and will finish tomorrow and build Study Stacks. If you built one at home tonight, you may get to play some of the games in class tomorrow for practice. You must practice the vocabulary to do well on this test.

Since we have been talking a bit about our calendar and its origins with Julius Caesar, I came across some interesting information. Check out this Google Doc I put together. Julian / Gregorian Calendar

Remember, this will be the last week that we will be posting to Edmodo. Future posts will be to Blogger and Canvas.

Friday - Catch Up Day

Hey all! Today students in Mr. Hogue's class took an opportunity to catch up on the interactive notebook pages 242-245. We also had a discussion over the material. If you missed, and you do not have these pages complete, you would be wise in completing them. Please use your text book chapter 36 to assist you. Mrs. Cobb's class caught up on the Veterans Day activity and began looking at some video clips on Christianity. Monday or Tuesday we will have a chance to work on the vocabulary for chapter 36.

Test Tips: Assessment over chapter 36 will be on Wednesday of next week. It will be a traditional multiple choice assessment of 20 questions. The first 12 or so will be the vocabulary from the Focus Sheet on Rome and chapter 36 and the remaining will be questions taken from your interactive notebook material.

Special Note:** You should start reading our daily blog posts on Canvas as we will be migrating all class activity to Canvas very shortly. Currently, we are posting to all three locations. Canvas login should include going to the PHM Canvas login. That is the only way it currently works. You can also login from the Student Launch Pad or google the URL phmcanvas. Your login is the same as your school username and the password is your id number only. Parents login user name is first initial, period, last name. I'm not sure if it is case sensitive. The password is your child's HAC password.

They were allowed to use their interactive notebooks to record information to their pre-write and then were allowed to use that information to pen their summary paragraph (Chromebook). Tomorrow students will Mark it Up. I will also give a little time for students to make last minute fixes to their paragraphs prior to marking them up.

Veterans Day Activity on Canvas

Hello! Today students reviewed for the summary assessment. They should now have in their interactive notebook all main ideas for each section. These will not have to be memorized as students will be able to use this to create their pre-write for the summary of the chapter. We also began an activity to honor our Veterans. Students were introduced to the new management system from the corporation called Canvas. Students were given a login and were able to access the module on Veterans Day. We will be able to finish this activity later in the week.

Monday - Intro to Canvas

Monday students were introduced to Canvas which is a student management program that will allow us to deliver on-line content to students. One day, this will replace Edmodo as our main mode of communication between student and teacher. For now, please continue using Edmodo to keep up with our daily blogs. We will make the announcement which will mean a switch. This will be used primarily by social studies classes as we have been given the one to one ability in each classroom. Other teachers will continue using Edmodo. We spent time learning Canvas by working through a Veterans Day activity about memorials.

Test Tips: Wednesday is the next test and it will be to write a summary paragraph about chapter 37. You will have your notebook to write a pre-write. Then, you will be required to use only the pre-write to complete your summary paragraph. It is modeled exactly after the one we wrote for chapter 32 the other day.

Friday - Summary Writing Completion

Hey, it's Friday. Today students wrapped up their influences of Rome summary, marked it up, and reflected on it. This was test practice for writing a summary paragraph. They also had an opportunity to look at the final missing pieces of their interactive notebook pages 248-249 on the legacies of Rome. They will make use of these next week while building a pre-write to their next assessment. If you missed today, be sure to have your summary completed as well as mark it up and a reflection. You also will need your interactive notebook pages complete.

Test Tip: Be sure you have completed your interactive notebook pages 248-249 as you will be using this information to write a summary paragraph about chapter 37.

Wednesday Absent Work!

If you missed class or are on extended class leave, here are the documents you may need to assist you in keeping pace with the class.

Document 1. Complete this form taking details from each of the seven sections listed on the document. These details will assist you in the formation of a summary paragraph over chapter 32. You will need your text book chapter 32 and a copy of this document. The copy is so that you may type directly on the document. We completed this document in class on Tuesday but some students needed a little time on Wednesday, as well.

Document 2. After completion of document 1 use it to assist you in the writing of your summary paragraph over chapter 32. You will write a seven sentence paragraph summarizing chapter 32. You will begin with a topic sentence announcing your topic but not giving detailed information. Remember, your topic is what influenced Rome to become what they became. Sentence 2-8 are your detail sentences and will make use of the details you found to complete document 1. Sentence 9 will be your conclusion. Once again, this is a nine sentence paragraph. Type your summary in the place where it says: Write Your Summary Starting Here: When you finish use the check list to highlight the specific areas. Write "check" in the completed boxes of the grid.

If you miss Thursday, November 7, complete the interactive notebook pages 248-249 and use the text book chapter 37. Students will complete that during class time on Thursday.

This is not homework!

Students worked in groups to write 1-2 sentence summaries for a single section and then completed a gallery walk to gather the key words from all the sections. Students will be ready to write/type their summaries tomorrow in class. This is not an assessment but will be practice for a summary assessment for legacies of Rome.

In Class Activity: Chapter 32 Summary Writing

Below you will find the directions to write a summary for chapter 32. Please make a copy of the document and be sure it is in your Rome folder in your drive before you start typing your summary.

Complete Video Notes and Preview Chapter 32 Beginnings of Rome

Hello! Today students worked on the final column of their video notes, the question column. They were to first write a question that could be answered in their notes and second a question that couldn't but was still about the topic. Students then previewed the chapter with their partners. Some classes were able to get in groups to begin the jigsaw activity. Students will be working on this tomorrow with the handout they picked up today. We will not be typing in the chromebooks tomorrow as we will be completing a gallery walk from their section summaries.

Completing the Arizona Smith Rome Video

Friday is here. Today we mostly completed the video notes for the Arizona Smith video. We worked combined in the LGI and the wyfi worked fairly well. We will wrap up the part we did not see next week. It was mainly listing some of the legacies of Rome. Have a great weekend.
